🤦🏼‍♀️Seems like every spouted sippy cup has packaging that reads: “Helps transition your toddler to an open cup!” but the truth is, sippy cups were never invented for that purpose AND have no place in feeding development. They don’t help transition toddlers any more than a bottle would…and of course you know a bottle doesn’t help with learning to drink from an open cup or a straw cup for that matter.

Here’s why:
👉🏼👉🏼Spouted sippy cups requires a child to do two things: Hold the cup like a bottle and suck on it like a bottle. Yep, it’s a well-marketed bottle in disguise.

🍶Learning to drink from an open cup requires 3 steps, learned in a sequence:
1.	Grasp the cup and raise it up without spilling.
2.	Bring cup to lips without spilling and tilt it up to take a sip…then…
3.	TILT IT BACK DOWN. Spouted sippy cups and bottles don’t require the “tilt down” and that’s why your never learns that step.

😳They can just swing that bottle/sippy cup around and it won’t matter. Spouted sippy cups were invented by in engineer who just wanted to keep his kid from spilling juice on the family carpet. True story. Engineers (I’m married to one – god love ‘em!) don’t know diddly about feeding development.😉

👉🏼👉🏼Here's the last and most crucial reason – spouted sippy cups may hinder your child’s ability to learn to lift their tongue up and swallow correctly – we call that a “mature swallow pattern” and it’s typically seen around 12 months of age. Like thumb sucking or drinking from a bottle, anything long and firm that holds the tongue down may stall feeding development.

❓Questions? Let me know in the comments – I’m here to answer them for you!

🤔Hey, do you have a preschool or daycare or engineer (LOL! Shout out to my hubby!🤍)…who would benefit from this info? Tag em in the comments or send them this post. SAVE IT in case you need it later for the future.

💕All the love…thanks for following me! 🥰Melanie

👉🏼Tag your daycare/preschool or share this post with them. – they care about child development and spouted sippy cups may hinder speech and feeding development because they can impact mouth development, just like staying on a bottle or pacifier for too long. 💕Very well-meaning teachers and directors of amazing child-care and preschools just aren’t familiar with this information, so I hope this educational series will help you change this policy.

✨But – help me please – like, comment, share – GO! 🔥💪🏻🔥That’s how a post like this reaches more schools, daycares and policy makers.

🥤There are several straw cups with silicone straws that are safe & relatively spill proof. You’ll find multiple options on my Amazon store, see #linkinbio or DM “best cups” for the direct link.

✨Here are a few more tips:
👉🏼Use silicone straws, always seated
🍼 Wean from the bottle shortly after the first birthday. This is also for a variety of reasons. To learn
about bottle weaning, join me for Bye-Bye Bottles on my course library. DM me for the link.
👶🏼Wean from the pacifier for daytime use by 6 months of age, and no later than 12 months for bedtimes. To learn more, join me for The Pacifier Course on my course library. DM me for the link.
