🥣Want your picky eater to learn to love soups? Deconstruct them! Four more tips below…

💕Hey, I’m Melanie, a pediatric feeding specialist here to help you raise healthy, happy eaters!

✨1✨Deconstructing simply means you pull out ingredients before or after making the final dish. So, I roasted some of the veggies and put some raw veggies in the soup to cook down. Both will end up with different tastes and textures and both are great to offer in the right container.

✨2✨That right container could be an ice cube tray or try my new favorite @soupercubes – simply the best endlessly reusable trays! Great for freezing small portions of soup too so you can offer soup in small samples to your picky eater throughout the winter (flu) season!

✨3✨Did you see all the herbs and garlic I threw in there? Don’t be afraid of FLAVOR, it can actually be a huge help for kids hesitant to take a taste. They often crave flavor! Herbs and garlic also provide antioxidants to support the immune system, and potentially have anti-inflammatory properties. At least, that’s what my RD friends tell me, so it must be true. Also that pop-out frozen garlic is THE BEST from @traderjoes!

✨4✨ALWAYS cut down a straw so that when they do try a taste, they instantly get that taste. A long straw means they have to prime and wait, prime and wait…and that just creates a lot of anticipatory anxiety.

✨Recent research indicates what may be obvious to some…veggies & fruits NEED TO SHOW UP in your home for kids to eventually fall in love with them. BUT, what about when fast food shows up near schools, in neighborhoods and where our older kids hang out a lot? How the heck can we overcome that influence?

🥦🍇🥕Well, this study suggests that what foods you have at home as compared to your “neighborhood food environment” helps to decrease your kid’s fast food consumption. In short, keep those fruits and vegetables showing up in your kitchen. Don’t give up. It does make a difference!
